While every day is ‘help an animal’ day here at Morena Pet Hospital, August 17th commemorates International Homeless Animals’ Day! This day was first conceived by the International Society for Animal Rights (ISARs) in 1992 for the purpose of shedding light on the issue of pet overpopulation and the need for worldwide spay & neuter programs.  This year marks the 22nd annual International Homeless Animals’ Day, in which more than 20 US states and 17 foreign locations will band together to promote this worthy cause (

How We Help:

We here at Morena Pet Hospital fully support this day and its mission & encourage all pet lovers out there to join us in celebrating this event. Spay or neuter is one of the primary solutions to avoid the pet overpopulation epidemic and one way we help to give back to our community is by being a part of the County of San Diego’s Reduced Spay/Neuter Referral program, offering low cost spays/neuters and also low cost vaccinations:

We regularly work with local animal shelters, rescues, and pet organizations throughout San Diego community in order to ensure the proper health of our local community pets and to promote responsible adoptions!  Some of the events you may have seen us at in the past include: The San Diego Humane Society’s Walk For Animals, Doggie Street Festival Adoption Event, Petco 5k9 Del Mar Walk/Run, Petco Sports Arena Adoption Fair, Humane Society’s Winter Wonderland Adoption Event, the Gaslamp Holiday Pet Parade, and Balboa Barks.

How You Can Help:

If you are interested in helping homeless animals, here are some ways:

  • Spay and neuter your pets.
  • Volunteer your time or donate food, items, and/or money to local animal shelters or rescue group. Even the smallest items or funds can help, especially given the number of homeless pets (E.g. Second Chance Pet Rescue lines their cages with newspapers and were asking individuals/businesses to donate any unwanted newspaper clippings).
  • Consider adopting or fostering a pet from your shelter or rescue group.
  • If you find a lost pet or see an injured animal on the street, contact your local animal shelter or animal control.
  • If you are active on social media sites (E.g. Facebook, Twitter) share posts about pet adoption events & those pets looking for their forever homes.

Please mark your calendars now and be part of this special day for homeless animals everywhere.  However you choose to spend International Homeless Animals Day, whether it is by giving your own pets a special snuggle, donating time or supplies, or simply spreading the word about International Homeless Animals’ Day, we are sure you will make a difference in the lives of the pets you see!

We were so happy to take part in Petco's Mego Adoption Fair this past weekend, held at the Petco Sports Arena.  Our veterinary hospital along with many local pet rescue groups and associations came together on Saturday to help network some of these orphaned animals and educate both pet owners and potential pet owners on proper pet care.
To witness the love & joy of a new home for the many rescued animals was priceless and we are pleased to announce that over 35 pets were adopted throughout the day and given the second chances they deserve!

Thank you to all who came out and participated in the San Diego Humane Society's Winter Wonderland Adoption Festival!

Many San Diegans came out to support this adoption-focused festival and its mission.   Rescue groups, pet professionals, vendors, and dedicated volunteers all contributed to make this event a success by informing the public on issues of pet health, training, spay/neuter, and responsible adoption.  Let's not forget it helped us "ADOPT" the holiday spirit as well with Santa photos, real snow, and carolers too!

Summer is here; which means thousands will be traveling to the Del Mar Fairgrounds for an "out of this world" experience featuring animal exhibits, shopping, rides, carnival games, and the much talked about fair food and drinks!

We San Diegans know that it simply would not be a fair without some animal fun!  This year farm animals and pet organizations will be showcased, along with a petting zoo and small animal exhibit.  You can see animals on display, farm equipment, animal shows, and of course, the ever-popular Swifty Swine races, where the crowd (both young and old) gets to interact and cheer on their favorite celebrity pig.  Some of the fan favorites include Kevin “Bacon,” Brad “Pig,” Robert “Pattinswine” and Justin “Be-boar.

Other fun animal programs at the Fair:

  • World of Horses: Located in the Infield, the World of Horses features 20 different breeds of horses. Free behind-the-scenes tours are offered daily now until July 2.
  • Turkey Stampede: This fun-filled show is also returning to the Infield! You'll learn all about turkeys, while experiencing some comic relief as these crazy birds race towards the finish line.
  • Junior Livestock Auction, Saturday, June 30: One of the Fair's most enduring traditions, the Junior Livestock Auction is the culmination of a year-long agriculture program, during which these young people get some "hands-on" experience with an animal project of their choice.

Special Animal Events

  • Purina Pro Plan Incredible Dog Challenge, June 8-9, Chevrolet Del Mar Arena
  • Charity Fair Horse Show, June 12-15, Chevrolet Del Mar Arena
